Pupil Leadership - Rights Respecting

Pupil Leadership

We believe that the best schools have a pupil-led culture where children take on key leadership roles and have their voices heard. We value the work of our pupil leaders, and use it to shape the teaching and learning that happens in our school. We are moulding leaders of the future, ready for work, ready for the world. We strive to craft confident and articulate leaders who can share their views with any audience and apply their leadership skills to real-life situations.

At Foxfield, we actively encourage children to challenge, discuss and debate issues which are important to them.  Our children feel safe to share their opinions and viewpoints. This is gathered through pupil voice surveys, learning walks and an 'Idea Box' in every classroom. The feedback the pupil leader receives from their peers is discussed at regular meetings and then acted upon accordingly.

The Value of Responsibility

At Foxfield Primary School, we believe that giving children meaningful roles and responsibilities is essential for developing their confidence, leadership skills, and sense of belonging. Every child has the opportunity to contribute to our school community, ensuring it is a welcoming place for everyone. These roles encourage our pupils to be active, respectful, and responsible citizens, both in school and in the wider world. We offer a range of roles that allow children to apply their skills and passions, making a real difference to the daily life of the school:

Rights Respecting Ambassadors

Our Rights Respecting Ambassadors are champions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Their mission is to promote a deeper understanding of children's rights across the school. They lead assemblies, conduct surveys, suggest improvements, and ensure our school ethos reflects the principles of respect, equality, and dignity for all pupils. They are integral to maintaining our Rights Respecting School status.

Pupil Librarians are the custodians of our school libraries and promoters of reading. Their mission is to foster a love of reading throughout the school. They help manage the libraries, ensuring books are tidy and correctly shelved. They recommend exciting titles to younger pupils, and assist with library events and book fairs. They are crucial in making the library an inviting and functional space.
Playground Buddies help make playtime fun and inclusive for everyone. Their Mission is to ensure the playground is a happy, safe, and friendly environment for all children. They organise games, help resolve minor disagreements, and ensure all children feel involved in playground activities. They are trained to be empathetic and responsible role models.

Taking on a school role provides invaluable experience and develops leadership skills in children. They learn how to lead by example, take initiative, and inspire their peers. Roles like Playground Buddies teach pupils to recognise and respond to the needs of others and instil a great sense of pride and self-worth. Pupils also learn the importance of commitment, organisation, and reliability.
