With the Sports leaders this term, we have two targets that we hope to achieve. The first is to give the sports leaders in Year 5 the specific training needed to support in the delivery of physical activity and school sport across all key stages. These children will then have the confidence and competence to engage and lead their peers and adults in delivering sport-specific activities. Once children have been trained, their expertise will be continually reviewed and monitored by an external member of the PE & School Sport Network who will continue to support their leadership throughout the year by giving small achievable targets.
Sports leaders will have a wide array of roles and responsibilities including supporting teachers with their PE lessons, delivering lunchtime clubs, organising sports day in the summer term and maintaining the use and upkeep of equipment in the PE cupboard.
Twenty students have been chosen from Year 5 by their teachers because they have a passion and desire to lead others. The ultimate goal is when these sports leaders are in Year 6, they will then train the Year 5’s chosen for the following academic year and this process will be continued over many years.
“I always thought that to be a sports leader you needed to be sporty, but now I understand that I can lead others without necessarily being passionate about a sport.”
