Welcome to Year 5

We are Cedar, Olive and Yew class.

After finding out about the global issue of water sanitation and sustainable development goal 6, the children in year 5 decided to take action and become change makers. The children wrote letters to parents to inform of them of this issue and explained to them that they wanted their support to raise money for Wateraid by completing a sponsored walk.

On Wednesday 8th December 2018, alongside pupils from Rockliffe Manor Primary School, the children completed a 10km walk in the rain from Woolwich to the O2, Greenwich riverside. The walk was just over 6 miles long, which is the average distance that women and children walk in Malawi to collect water that is very often contaminated and disease ridden. So far, the classes have jointly raised close to £1000 through the very generous donations of families, friends and neighbours. “When I was beginning to feel tired I kept on remembering the children in Malawi that have to make a similar journey on a daily basis just to survive, then I kept on going” – child in Yew tree class.

In Art year 5 have been using the style of the impressionist artist Claude Monet to recreate a painting of Tower Bridge. We worked in small groups to complete our canvases which look so great.

In English, we have been writing a newsletter which will be shared to our partner schools. The pupils in year 5 really wanted to spread the word about their project and raise the awareness about the issue to a larger audience. They cannot wait to get feedback from the pupils in the partnership schools.
